KUSU ACCUSES KU AUTHORITIES OF FOILING THE EVENT
Srinagar, May 29 (KNS): The students of University of Kashmir Thursday organized a protest sit-in in the varsity campus on the fourth anniversary of Asiya and Neelofar, the two women who were allegedly raped and then murdered in Shopian in 2009.
According to the reports received by KNS, more than 300 students belonging to various streams participated in the sit in on Thursday. The event was organized by the banned students’ union KUSU. Reports informed that the union had been campaigning for the event from the last one week- distributing posters and pamphlets. However, the youth associated with KUSU accused varsity authorities of tearing apart the posters and making attempts to foil the event. According to KNS correspondent, a protest sit-in was organized in the afternoon on Thursday with both male female students participating in the event. More than 15 speakers spoke during the program amid huge slogans.
The students while paying tributes to Asiya and Neelofar- stating that both women and the thoughts are being ‘raped’ in Kashmir. The students during the event were holding play cards and banners that read, “Forgetting is a luxury that oppressed cannot afford.”
Also the KUSU union told KNS over phone that various attempts were made by the university authorities to thwart the protest-sit in. They accused that the mics and speakers were seized by the varsity authorities and that the speakers had to address the audience sans microphones. According to the statement issued by KUSU to KNS, to me Kashmir University Students’ Union[KUSU] Thursday held a commemoration program ‘regarding Shopian double rape and murder Case’ in the lawns of Iqbal Library.
“Students started assembling near the venue from 1:30 PM. Despite the stiff resistance from the university authorities and police, students gathered in large numbers amidst anti-India & pro-Azadi sloganeering. The event started with Tilawat-e-Quran by a student. A student spoke about the case history that included cover up of the case by puppet regime, concocted CBI report, 48-day shutdown by people of Shopian and the valley wide protests that followed the heinous incident,” reads the statement issued to KNS.
The statement maintained that some students also read-out their poetry in remembrance of Asiya & Neelofar Jan. The students, including a large number of girls displayed placards reading slogans like “War has just begun we will see through it”, “Forgetting is a luxury and oppressed cannot afford”, “Justice is Freedom”. “Rape is used as a war weapon by India to demoralize us from fighting the indian tyranny and muzzle the voices of Freedom,” said one of the students addressing the gathering. “Every student speaker paid rich tributes to all the martyrs of Kashmir and pledged not to forget their sacrifices for the pious cause of Freedom,” said the statement.
