KUSU remembers Asiya, Neelofar | RK

Rising Kashmir News

Srinagar, May 29: Students at the University of Kashmir Thursday participated in a sit-in protest to remember Shopian alleged double rape and murder victims on their fifth anniversary.
Dozens of students under the banner of banned Kashmir University Students Union (KUSU) assembled in the lawns of Iqbal Library in the afternoon and hold a Dharna. Students were holding placards with slogans written on them. “Justice is Freedom,” reads one placard.
Participants including a number of girls also addressed the gathering following by pro-freedom slogans. Students also recited poetry in memory of Asiya and Neelofar who were allegedly raped and murdered in Shopian in 2009.
In the beginning, University authorities tried to  stop the students to hold sit-in. However students offered stiff resistance after which authorities allowed them to sit in for ten minutes with a condition that the students will not move from the place in a procession. As the number of students increased, authorities seemed to be helpless in dispersing the sit-in and allowed the sit-in.
Student leaders in their speeches paid tributes to Asiya and Neelofar and pledged to fight for justice and condemned the government version that the victims were drowned in a stream. “The pictures of our sisters (Asiya and Neelofar) are still in our mind and soul. The pictures of blood stained victims are enough proof that they were raped and then brutally murdered,” speakers said.
According to KUSU statement issued here, the students started assembling near the venue from 1:30 PM. “Despite the stiff resistance from the university authorities & police, students gathered in large numbers amidst anti-India & pro-Azadi sloganeering,” the statement said.
It said that the event started with Tilawat-e-Quran by a student. A student spoke about the case history that included coverup of the case by puppet regime, concocted CBI report, 48-day shutdown by people of Shopian and the valley wide protests that followed the heinous incident.
“Rape is used as a war weapon by India to demoralize us from fighting the indian tyranny and muzzle the voices of Freedom,” said one of the students addressing the gathering.
